Conference Review: Luxembourg 2025

From June 18 to 20, Luxembourg hosted the 33rd European Forum of the Insurance against Accidents at Work and Occupational Diseases conference. Under the theme Accident Prevention and Insurance in Evolving Work Environments, members of the European Forum and invited guests gathered to explore how technological and societal developments are reshaping accident prevention and insurance.

The first day was dedicated to the meetings of the European Forum’s Working Groups on communication, legislation, digitalisation and occupational diseases. It also marked the inaugural meeting of the newly established Working Group Prevention, reflecting the European Forum’s commitment on reducing workplace accidents and occupational diseases. The day concluded with a welcome event at the Cité de la sécurité sociale, where our guests enjoyed traditional Luxembourgish food while networking informally and exchanging ideas ahead of the main conference.

The second day, held at the Chamber of Commerce Luxembourg, featured a full conference programme. The conference opened with a welcome speech from Luxembourg’s Minister of Health and Social Security, Ms. Martine Deprez, before moving into a keynote from BUTZI, who used a combination of magic and storytelling to explain artificial intelligence concepts and encourage the exploration of AI tools. This was followed by Prof. Dr. Christian Kapteyn, who addressed the impact of generative AI on the future of training and education. The morning session concluded with Prof. Dr. Marcus B. Müller, presenting The ABC of Life, a practical framework for promoting mental health and well-being in modern work environments.

The afternoon session began with Mr. Tim Tregenza from EU OSHA, who presented occupational health and safety from a European perspective, focusing on demographic change, automation, climate change and mental health. Mr. Helmut Ehnes, Chair of the ISSA VISION ZERO Steering Committee, shared recent developments in the VISION ZERO strategy, reaffirming the shared ambition to eliminate work-related accidents and diseases. Dr. Christian Felten (Basi) discussed the risks and challenges posed by the platform economy, while Ms. Anna Hui from the IAIABC concluded the session with an overview of accident prevention and insurance in the United States, offering valuable international comparisons.

The day ended with a gala dinner at a castle outside Luxembourg City, featuring a close-up magic performance by David Goldrake. The third and final day was devoted to the European Forum’s Plenary Assembly.

The conference in Luxembourg reaffirmed the European Forum’s role as a platform for cooperation and knowledge exchange. The discussions highlighted the importance of forward-looking strategies to address emerging risks while safeguarding the health and safety of workers in a rapidly evolving world of work.

The 34th European Forum conference will be held in 2026 in Warsaw, Poland. ●
